Paige and I are relentlessly on the search for new music, being that the crap out now is just, well, crap. We find decent stuff in the obvious places, like Reverbnation, and the most off-the-wall spots like in our friend’s cell phone recording lists. Yet, it was still a shocker when I discovered my favorite Facebook friend, Sara Joyner, had the good shit we needed all along. I knew she was working on music, but you know, EVERYBODY is working on music… I was hella surprised her mixtape, Good Girls Act Bad, gave me that exact Eurodance, urban sound we go HAM for.

Women and young girls make up more than a quarter of new HIV/AIDS cases in the US. Every 30-minutes a female is diagnosed with HIV and it’s the leading killer for young black women.

Today I rocked red pumps to remind myself to remind my pretty chicks to get tested, become aware of your status, options, and ways to protect yourselves. Its a beautiful blessing to be a woman, but like most blessings this greatness comes with great responsibility…

While icon, Gabrielle Coco Chanel, provided women with tailored suits and flawless seaming, Elsa Schiaparelli was shocking the world in, well, shocking pink! Famous for vibrant colors (she really did invent shocking pink), mad designs, and over-the-top accessories, Schiaparelli viewed fashion as the art of life, instead of necessary design.

She introduced the padded shoulder in 1932; designed fur bed jackets and rhinestone-trimmed lingerie in the 1940s; and in the 1950s popularized “shortie” coats in vivid reds, golds, and chartreuses.

Theres no better time to celebrate being a pretty chick than Women’s History Month!!! And what better way for a pretty chick to celebrate than honoring the pretty chicks that shined before us?

Elizabeth Keckley was born a slave in Dinwiddie, Virginia in Feburary 1818. She used her gift for creative design and detailed sewing to earn money from wealthy clients, and eventually was able to borrow $1200 from a client to buy her freedom, as well as her son’s. In 1860, Keckley moved to Washington, DC where she designed couture and ready-to-wear dresses for prominent wives of political figures including Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee. Her work soon caught the interest of First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln who commissioned Keckley to design her dress for the Inaugural Ball. The Lincolns were so impressed with the dress, they hired Keckley to be the First Lady’s personal seamstress.
